What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease in which your blood sugar, or blood glucose, levels are too high. Glucose comes from the foods you eat, while insulin is a hormone that helps get glucose into your cells to supply them with energy. With type 1 diabetes, your body can’t make insulin. With the much more common type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin very well. Without enough insulin, too much glucose stays in your blood. Over time, excess blood glucose can cause significant health problems and damage your eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Diabetes is also a risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other issues.
Your Diabetes Management Partner
Having prediabetes puts you at higher risk to develop type 2 diabetes, while some pregnant women get gestational diabetes. Because of lifestyle choices like poor eating habits and too much inactivity, many children are now developing diabetes at an early age. Fortunately, blood tests can show if you have prediabetes, adult-onset diabetes, or juvenile diabetes. One type of test called A1C can also help you check how well you are doing while managing your diabetes. At Torres Family Care, we support patients with diabetes prevention, education, and management programs that include glucose testing, exercise, diet, weight control, medication compliance, and more.
